We were supposed to be on our way to a family reunion in Michigan with a stop in Chicago yesterday, which also happened to be Father’s Day.
When I booked the tickets I didn’t realize we were to be traveling on Father’s Day! Oops!
I usually make a special Father’s Day Dinner for my husband with only his favorite foods, but this year he would have to take a raincheck for it…or so I thought.
Our 6:30 am flight to Chicago with a connecting flight through Denver was delayed until 10:30am due to technical issues as per a 3:45am text message I received.
This required a change in our flight from Denver to Chicago which we were able to arrange, Whew!
When another text message announced the 10:30am flight was being moved up to 9:30am we were happy for the news .(An extra hour to wait in Denver, but ok!)
We arrived at the airport with plenty of time and were waiting to board when a surprising announcement was madei!
The captain of our plane which we could see out the window would be coming in to speak with all those waiting to board the flight to Denver !! A bit unusual, for sure…can’t be good!
He told us the plane had been having mechanical problems (something with the gears) which they were certain had been resolved before taking off this morning.
However, on the way to the SLO airport there remained problems. Now they were awaiting mechanics from Fresno to come work on the plane. (What?)
He closed by saying, “You don’t want to be up in the air with a problem with the gears!”
He would keep us posted as to when it would depart.
At which point I turned to my husband and said we are not getting on that plane even if they think it is fixed! ( and we’re not certain it ever did).
This being graduation weekend for Cal Poly we soon discovered we were not going to find two seats on a plane until Tuesday morning! All planes were fully booked. (possibly overbooked).
Fortunately we were able to get the last 2 seats on that flight, leaving tomorrow morning at 6:00 am.!
We got back home, exhausted and stressed ( up since 3:45 am)), but happy we were still going to get to the reunion, even though our trip was now cut by almost 3 days.
It occurred to me my husband could now have his Father’s Day dinner.
However, the fridge was empty since we were going away, so after a strong cup of coffee, I headed to the store with shrimp cocktail, salad, steaks with mushrooms, oven fries, and Cerignola olives in mind. All his favorites!
Make your own sundaes for dessert would have to do!
I came back with 2 gorgeous bone-in rib steaks, 3 baking potatoes, salad ingredients, large white button mushrooms, the last 9 fresh jumbo shrimp in the case, ice cream, bananas, and berries to add to the toppings for the sundaes.
I splurged a bit, but he (we) deserved it!
And here is the resulting dinner…
