The Jewish New Year begins this coming Sunday at sundown. As is tradition it is a time to celebrate by eating sweet foods symbolizing wishes for a sweet year ahead.
In anticipation of the holiday, this past Sunday the San Luis Obispo Jewish Community Center / Jewish Federation sponsored its first “Apples and Honey Festival” which included some of the delicious treats you see in the photo above.
Highlights of the Festival included apple-related crafts, artists’ booths, apple and honey tasting, baked goods and kosher hot dogs, music, face painting, bee education by See Canyon Fruit Ranch and storytelling.
For the bake sale I contributed my favorite honey cake , the definitive honey cake, my favorite apple cake, and cinnamon raisin walnut rugelach. Others contributed challah rolls, homemade applesauce , noodle kugel, and more delicious rugelach.

You can follow the links for the recipes for the honey cake and apple cake which I have posted before. You will have to wait a bit longer for the rugelach recipe, but I promise it’s coming.
I wanted to get this up before leaving tomorrow morning for our son’s wedding in the San Diego area this weekend. So excited! More to come about that when we return.
