BBQ Chicken and Grilled Sausage Dinner

This past week we have been very busy with a special house guest.  Our aunt came to visit us all the way from Reston, Virginia!

Before moving to the west coast almost 2 years ago we lived only a half-hour’s drive from our home in Maryland to hers in Virginia, and we saw each other often.

Since moving we have been in touch via phone and Facebook, and through this blog, and we have tried to describe what life here is like, but as the saying goes, “seeing is believing”, and now she was about to see what we have been talking about for the last couple of years.

We were very excited for her arrival!  This was her first visit to San Luis Obispo!

We couldn’t wait to show her our new home and our town, and introduce her to  the central coast of California.  She has traveled the world, but had never been to this area until now.

It didn’t take long for her to understand why we love it here so much.

Of course there is never enough time to do everything, but we managed to enjoy some great meals, including two lunches with an ocean view, a dinner at one of our favorite Italian restaurants downtown, and an afternoon stop at a great little place near us for a glass of wine (what else?) and some small plates.

I filled in with some really good meals, but the highlight
for her was the weekend when both of our sons and their girlfriends came
and she was able to have time with them, and them with her.

My husband fired up the grill, and the menu included  grilled chicken with my Sweet and Sour BBQ Sauce, grilled fennel and Italian sausages on rolls with onions and peppers, my favorite potato salad, as well as a mixed green salad.

Dessert was another family favorite…my Glazed Fudge Cake with Chambord.  This time I split the cake horizontally and spread the middle with seedless raspberry preserves and chocolate glaze.

The week went by quickly to say the least.

We walked our charming downtown, went to the Thursday night farmer’s market, did a wine tasting at one of the many vineyards, drove around and toured the area, and spent a couple days at the beach, one of her most favorite things to do.

She is back on eastern time now, and we miss her already, but as she
told me when she left… she’ll be back, and she’s hoping her next trip
out to the west coast will be for a wedding…I couldn’t agree more!!!
