Hanukkah Cookies

Tomorrow evening is the first night of Hanukkah which will be marked by the lighting of the first of eight candles on the menorah symbolizing the eight days of this Jewish Festival.

As is customary during this 8 day celebration foods cooked in oil such as potato latkes (pancakes), and jelly doughnuts are eaten.

But the celebration wouldn’t be complete without some Hanukkah sugar cookies in the shape of  dreidels ( 4-sided tops children spin to play a game, each side marked with a letter from the Hebrew alphabet)  and menorahs ( the candelabra which holds 9 candles…one for each night of Hanukkah, and one to light them).

Back to the sugar cookies…I have been making these for as long as I can remember… my sons who both approach 6 feet today were so small they had to stand on the kitchen chair to help me mix the dough and decorate the cookies… I don’t know who enjoyed it more… me or them?

So even though there have been no little ones living in our home for quite a while I have continued to bake Hanukkah cookies every year.  It wouldn’t be the holiday if I didn’t.

The color of the sprinkles may change, but the wonderful memories those cookies conjure up remain unchanged.

And one of these days I hope to have some little ones standing on the chair beside me again.  A  mother can hope, can’t she?

Here’s the recipe for these easy rolled cookies…
